What is Participatory Budgeting?
The Scottish Government is promoting and supporting Participatory Budgeting (PB) as a tool for community engagement across Scotland. The PB sits alongside the objectives of the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015. This is part of the government’s policy drive to empower local communities and develop new ways of commissioning services and is seen as an important resource to build on the wider development of participatory democracy in Scotland.
Through Participatory Budgeting Scottish Government aims to:
- Increase the quality of community engagement
- Increase public trust in local democracy
- Stimulate dialogue within communities
- Promote well targeted public investments.
