‘Our Place, Our Families’, Renfrew
Our Place our families is one of five projects that make up the larger ‘Our place, Renfrew West’ project. The larger project is funded by the Big Lottery with the aim of improving the quality of life of people who live in the community.
In November 2011 Our Place Our Families was awarded £166,724.
The origins of the project go back to 2001 when Moorpark Parent Support Group was set up to provide help and advice to local people. With BIG Lottery funding, the organisation now covers a wider area and has its own office in Paisley Road, Renfrew and employs three part-time members of staff and a large team of local volunteers.
The project provides and organises a number of services and local events, with the overarching aim of improving health, getting local young people involved in sport and physical activity, helping people become more employable, and bringing people together in the community.
Here are some of the things that they have organised recently:
- Affordable community fun days at local community centres
- Community clean-ups
- A community-drop-in facility
- Parent support groups
- Sport and play sessions for children and young people
The employment support service provides local adults with help to develop a CV, build up their confidence and apply for jobs online.
It also provides training and volunteering opportunities that can make a job application more attractive to employers and has links with other organisations and programmes such as Engage Renfrewshire, Invest in Renfrewshire, West College Scotland and the council’s Advice Works service.
